In a significant step towards bolstering its artillery capabilities and advancing self-reliance in defence production, the Indian Army has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of rocket ammunition tailored for its in-service 122mm Grad BM-21 Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system. This initiative, announced recently, underscores the Army’s commitment to strengthening its firepower across diverse operational terrains while aligning with the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” programs.

The 122mm Grad BM-21, a Soviet-origin system introduced into the Indian Army decades ago, remains a cornerstone of its rocket artillery regiments. Renowned for its rapid salvo capability—capable of launching 40 rockets in under 20 seconds—it provides critical fire support in both offensive and defensive operations. The RFI aims to secure a steady supply of compatible rocket ammunition, ensuring the system’s continued effectiveness across India’s varied geography, from the deserts of Rajasthan to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas.
The RFI outlines stringent requirements for the rocket ammunition, reflecting the Army’s operational needs. The ammunition must perform reliably in all terrains—plains, semi-deserts, deserts, and high-altitude areas—demonstrating versatility for potential conflict zones along India’s borders. It is expected to offer defined maximum and minimum ranges, allowing flexibility in engaging targets at varying distances. Additionally, the Army has specified a minimum service life of 10 years, with provisions for extension through inspections and repairs, ensuring long-term usability and cost-effectiveness.
