Indian Army Deploys Vehicle-Mounted Infantry Mortar System Near LAC

The Indian Army has deployed its cutting-edge Vehicle Mounted Infantry Mortar System (VMIMS) in the rugged, high-altitude terrain of Sikkim, marking a significant step in enhancing its defence preparedness along the sensitive Sino-Indian border. The deployment, announced by the Trishakti Corps on X on March 14, 2025, underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense technology under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
These Vehicle-Mounted Infantry Mortar Systems (VMIMS) are mounted on Mahindra’s Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV), a lightweight, four-wheel-drive, air-transportable, tactical armoured specialist vehicle. These mortar systems are equipped with 81mm mortars.

As per the RFP, the Indian Army has initially acquired 50 such systems on a fast-track basis. High-altitude warfare poses unique challenges, including extreme weather, rugged terrain, and logistical difficulties. The VMIMS addresses these issues by offering rapid deployment and maneuverability, which are crucial for maintaining a strategic edge in the Himalayas. Equipped with 81mm mortars, the VMIMS delivers indirect fire support to infantry units, enabling them to engage enemy positions without direct exposure. The VMIMS can be used in a variety of missions, including offensive operations, defensive positions, and peacekeeping roles.
