Indian Army JCO Allegedly Maltreated by Bihar Police

The Indian Army has taken strong exception to the reported “maltreatment and arrest” of a serving Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and his wife by police personnel from the Telhara Police Station in Bihar. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 9, 2025, has brought to light the need for better coordination and respect between local law enforcement and the armed forces.

According to reports, personnel from Telhara Police Station in Bihar arrived at the JCO’s residence in the middle of the night and took the couple into custody. The JCO, who was on leave at the time, was allegedly beaten by the police before being placed under arrest. During the ordeal, the police also mistreated his wife. The police assaulted the JCO and placed him under arrest. The reasons for the arrest remain unclear, but the heavy-handed approach by the police has drawn sharp criticism from Army authorities.

The Indian Army’s Surya Command, under whose jurisdiction the JCO serves, took swift action upon learning of the incident. The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the local Army formation met with the Director General of Police (DGP) of Bihar to address the matter. Following the meeting, the DGP ordered the immediate suspension of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Telhara Police Station and initiated an Inspector General (IG)-level inquiry to investigate the allegations of misconduct. The DGP also assured the Army of a transparent and impartial investigation, promising strict action against those found guilty.

The JCO has since been released, and the Officer Commanding of his Army unit visited the family at their residence to ensure their well-being. In a statement shared on X, Surya Command expressed gratitude for the prompt response from the Bihar Police while emphasizing their commitment to ensuring justice for the JCO and his family. “Army authorities have taken serious note of maltreatment of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army and his wife while on leave,” the post read, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of military personnel by local law enforcement. According to a 2023 report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Bihar recorded 1,127 cases of police misconduct, including excessive use of force and unlawful arrests, pointing to systemic challenges within the state’s policing system. This latest incident has only added fuel to the ongoing debate about the need for reforms to prevent such occurrences, especially when they involve members of the armed forces who dedicate their lives to national security.

The investigation into the Telhara incident is ongoing, with the Bihar Police under pressure to deliver a fair and thorough inquiry. Meanwhile, the Indian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its personnel, ensuring that the JCO and his family receive the care and justice they deserve during this challenging time. As the situation unfolds, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between India’s military and civilian institutions, particularly in times of peace when such incidents can erode public trust in both.
